Although it isn’t usually listed on your job description, one of the key roles of a supervisor is to keep a pulse on how your work team seems to be feeling about their jobs, their work mates, and the company in general. An attitude of “hey, you’re lucky to have this job!” doesn’t stand up to modern workplace practices or employee expectations. Paying attention to frustrations, tension, and unusual behavior and doing what you can to figure out what may be behind them goes a long way to strengthening your relationships (and leadership) with your work teams. Such action may uncover policy issues that you can address with upper management, employee needs that should be discussed with human resources, or perhaps general unrest that should be reported to your manager or the labor relations team.
